Curious Cabinets

Turning Chippenham’s roadside cabinets into tiny galleries.

Public Art Chippenham invited everyone to take part in Curious Cabinets, a community art competition to design artwork for selected roadside communications cabinets in the Artisan Quarter.

Inspired by similar projects in nearby towns, decorating these otherwise dull green and black cabinets can help brighten streets, reduce vandalism, and even lift local pride.

We have two types of roadside cabinets in Chippenham: Openreach (BT) boxes and Telent (traffic signal) boxes. The winning designs will be used to paint or wrap these boxes in 2026, transforming everyday street furniture into miniature pieces of public art.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Once the winners have been announced and contacted, we’ll begin working closely with them to plan how their designs will be brought to life on the selected cabinets. Whether applied as hand-painted artwork or high-quality vinyl wraps, we’ll carefully prepare each installation over the coming months. We’re excited to see these ideas move from concept to street, and we’ll be sharing updates on our progress as the project develops.

We’ve been blown away by the response to our Curious Cabinets Competition. The creativity, imagination and variety across the submissions have been incredible — and we’re thrilled to share that we received 57 fantastic entries from artists of all ages and backgrounds.

Over the past few weeks, we proudly exhibited all entries and invited the public to help us choose their favourites through a community vote. The support, conversations and enthusiasm around the exhibition have been amazing to see, and it perfectly reflects what Public Art Chippenham is all about — bringing creativity into shared spaces and celebrating local talent. Each entry represents a unique vision for how our town’s telecom cabinets could be transformed into vibrant pieces of public art.

Our panel is now reviewing the public vote results alongside the judging criteria, and we’ll be announcing the winners very soon — so keep an eye on this page and our social channels for updates.

A huge thank you to everyone who entered, visited the exhibition, voted, and supported the project. The level of creativity shown has made this competition truly special.
